ZeroConfig vs WP Rocket

Competitor facts checked 25 October 2026 on their public websites

WP Rocket is the best-known paid caching plugin for WordPress: mature, widely supported by hosts and themes, with a settings screen for every technique. ZeroConfig takes the opposite approach: one switch, the heavy work on our servers, and a browser check on your own pages. Here is how they differ, including where WP Rocket is the better choice.

Choose ZeroConfig if

  • You don't want to learn what "Remove unused CSS" or "Delay JavaScript" will do to your theme.
  • You want images converted to WebP and AVIF without a second plugin or subscription. WP Rocket does not create WebP files; its documentation points to Imagify for that.
  • You want a free plan for a site that doesn't justify a paid licence.
  • You want a check on your own pages that switches off a feature when it changes how a page looks.

Choose WP Rocket if

  • You want a product with a long track record and broad support from managed hosts and theme authors. ZeroConfig is in beta.
  • You want control over each optimisation, or features ZeroConfig leaves out on purpose: database cleanup, full cache preloading.
  • You run more than 25 sites: WP Rocket's Multi licence covers 50 and more.
  • Your site is on a managed host with its own page cache (WP Engine, Kinsta). ZeroConfig's images and files work there, but automatic detection of the host's cache is not available yet.

Switching from WP Rocket

  1. Clear WP Rocket's cache, then deactivate and delete WP Rocket. Two page caches fight over the same files; ZeroConfig warns you if it sees another optimiser still active.
  2. Install ZeroConfig (Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin) and press Turn on under Settings → ZeroConfig.
  3. A few minutes later the Safety Check has loaded your pages with and without each feature; "Is it working?" on the same screen shows the result.
  4. If you used Imagify only to make WebP files, ZeroConfig now does that on its servers. Keep Imagify if you also want your original uploads compressed.

Questions

Is ZeroConfig faster than WP Rocket?

We have not published a head-to-head benchmark, and results depend on your theme, plugins and hosting more than on the plugin. The fair test is your own site: note your PageSpeed score with WP Rocket, switch, and check again. The Free plan costs nothing to try.

Can I run ZeroConfig and WP Rocket together?

No. Two optimisers are slower than one and fight over the same cache files. Deactivate WP Rocket first.

Do I lose anything by leaving WP Rocket?

Database cleanup and full cache preloading: ZeroConfig does not offer them. Everything else on WP Rocket's list has an equivalent, and image conversion is added.

Try it on your own site. The Free plan covers one site with no card. Install, press Turn on, and compare your PageSpeed score before and after.
